Description
Ground ogbono is made from the dried, ground seeds of Irvingia gabonensis — the wild mango tree — and is the defining ingredient of Ogbono soup, Nigeria’s most famous draw soup. When stirred into hot liquid, ogbono creates the characteristic thick, smooth, mucilaginous texture — the “draw” — that makes this soup so beloved and distinctive.
Ogbono is sometimes called bush mango seeds, wild mango seeds, African mango seeds, or apon (Yoruba). The soup made from it is also known as draw soup or ofe apon in Igbo.
Key features:
- Also known as wild mango seeds, bush mango, African mango seeds, apon, ofe apon, draw soup base
- Creates the signature draw (mucilaginous) texture of Ogbono soup
- Rich, nutty flavour — deeper than ogiri or achi
- 100g, ground and ready to use — no pre-soaking needed
- Sourced weekly from Nigeria for maximum freshness
- High in soluble fibre
How to use:
Heat your palm oil, then add ground ogbono directly and stir vigorously for 2–3 minutes before adding any liquid — this step is key to achieving the proper draw without lumps. Add stock gradually, stirring constantly. Add meat, fish, crayfish, and leafy greens (spinach, uziza leaves, or bitter leaf work well). Simmer until the draw becomes smooth and silky. Serve with eba, fufu, pounded yam, or amala.
