Description
Ground uziza is made from the seeds of Piper guineense — known in English as Ashanti pepper, West African black pepper, or false cubeb. Unlike ordinary black pepper, uziza has a more complex flavour: warm, spicy, and slightly medicinal, with a unique aromatic depth that is irreplaceable in authentic West African cooking.
Both the leaves and seeds of the uziza plant are used in Nigerian cooking, but ground uziza seed delivers a more intense, concentrated heat and aroma than the fresh leaves.
Key features:
- Also known as Ashanti pepper, West African black pepper, false cubeb (Piper guineense)
- Essential spice for Afang soup, Edikang Ikong, Ofe Onugbu, and pepper soup
