Description
Cocoyam powder is made from ede — the Igbo word for cocoyam (taro, Colocasia esculenta) — dried and finely ground into a ready-to-use thickening powder. It is the traditional thickener for some of Nigeria’s most-loved Igbo soups, particularly Oha soup (ofe ora) and Ofe Onugbu (bitter leaf soup), where it creates a smooth, velvety consistency that is central to the dish’s character.
Key features:
- Also known as ede powder, taro powder, cocoyam flour (Igbo: ede)
- Traditional thickener for Oha soup (ofe ora), Ofe Onugbu, bitter leaf soup
- Gives soup a smooth, silky body — different from achi or ofor which are more starchy
- Made by Coco Samba (Bullion Go-Neat Global), Nigeria
- 100g pack, sourced weekly
- Ready to use — no preparation needed
How to use:
Mix a tablespoon with cold water to form a lump-free paste before adding to your soup. Stir into the simmering pot 10–15 minutes before the end of cooking. The most common use is in Oha soup — add after the oha leaves to create the characteristic thick, smooth finish. Can replace or combine with achi for different textures.
