Description
Banga spice refers to the blend of dried aromatic botanicals — including dried oburunbebe stick, atama leaves, and other traditional herbs — that give Banga soup its characteristic deep, woody, resinous fragrance. Banga soup is also known as Ofe Akwu in Igbo, Palm Nut Soup in English, and Ofe Banga — a celebrated dish of the Niger Delta and South-South Nigeria.
This fresh version is the whole, unprocessed spice material — more aromatic and flavourful than pre-mixed dried powder blends.
Key features:
- Used in Banga soup, Ofe Akwu, Ofe Banga, Palm Nut Soup — all names for the same beloved Nigerian classic
- Fresh whole spice botanicals — more aromatic than pre-mixed powder
- Includes traditional aromatics: oburunbebe stick, atama leaves, and related herbs
- Sourced weekly from Nigeria — 100g per pack
- Essential for authentic Delta-style Banga soup
How to use:
Add the fresh banga spice to the pot along with your palm nut extract (or canned banga base), meat, and fish at the start of cooking. Allow to simmer with the other ingredients so the aromatics infuse into the broth. Remove the larger pieces before serving. Pairs with stockfish, smoked fish, beef, and goat meat for a full pot of Banga soup.
